The DaVinci Code

On May 19, 2006 The DaVinci Code will open in theaters around the country.  What has already been a blockbuster book is likely to become a blockbuster movie as well—and the fact that Tom Hanks is in the lead role pretty much guarantees its success. The book was, of course, heretical fiction, but it was hard to put down.  Here are two different adult courses that help people take a look at The DaVinci Code with critical eyes.  Both are quite well done and both feature our own Dr. Paul Maier in prominent ways.  The two resources are:

1.  “Discussing the DaVinci Code” by Lee Strobel and Garry Poole from Zondervan Publishing.  This is a four session DVD based course that features interviews with Dr. Paul Maier, Dr. Kathy McReynolds, and Dr. Mark Strauss. Available through Amazon.

2.  “The DaVinci Code: Truth Revealed” by Rev. Luke Biggs and Rev. John Kunze (Lutheran pastors) produced by Inspirmedia and partially funded by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.  This 9 session course is also video based and features Dr. Paul Maier.  Click here for more information on this one.

The Gospel of Judas

There may be "nothing new under the sun," but you wouldn't know it from some of the news reports surrounding announcement by the National Geographic Society that a third or fourth-century Coptic codex -- the so-called "Gospel of Judas" -- has been restored, authenticated, and translated. The two-hour National Geographic special that aired on Palm Sunday heightened the interest in this document.  This document and other Gnostic "gospels" are nothing new, but they do grab the attention and imagination of the American public. You also may have members of your congregation and others who are wondering about this latest round of media activity and the document at its center. To help you with those questions, the staff of the Commission on Theology and Church Relations has prepared an "FAQ" on the "Gospel of Judas," which is posted on the Synod's Web site for easy access. You can find it by clicking here.  Also available online is an audio file from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis , of an April 10 convocation featuring a discussion of the document by professors James Voelz and Jeffrey Kloha. They discuss how the document is portrayed in the media, basic features of the manuscript, Gnosticism, and canonicity. Look under "news" on the seminary's Web site: click here.
